Dr. Gerber is a graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine, diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Rheumatology sub-specialty and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She was the Chief, Rehabilitation Medicine Department at NIH 1975-2005 and an attending in Arthritis there from 1975-2000.
Currently, she is teaching faculty at George Mason University (University Professor, Emerita) and co-principal investigator in the Sikdar Bioengineering Lab studying myofascial pain. While there, she established the Center for the Study of Chronic Illness and Disability, Laboratory for the Study and Simulation of Human Movement, created the PhD program in Rehabilitation Science and received $7 million in funding from NIH, NSF, NIDILLR, PNC and Henry Jackson Foundation.
Currently, she is Director for Research for Medicine, Inova Health System and Medical Director for Outcomes Research, Beatty Center for Liver Disease. She served as Rheumatology Section Chief 2013-2021.
Her research has focused on developing treatments and outcome measures for abnormalities of human movement, and studying relationships among pain syndromes and fatigue in chronic illness. Much of her professional activities have centered around helping to develop curricula in rehabilitative rheumatology and cancer rehabilitation. She supports undergraduates in their efforts to gain experience in clinical research and supporting PMR residents in pursuing cancer rehabilitation. She has authored >225 peer reviewed manuscripts and 60 textbook chapters.Currently, she is a reviewer for several journals. She is the recipient of multiple awards from USPHS, NIH and professional societies.
She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
