Thiru M. Annaswamy, MD, MA, FAAPMR, currently serves as a Tenured Professor and Rocco Ortenzio Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation after joining the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine in September of 2022. In addition, Annaswamy oversees the 76-bed Penn State Health Rehabilitation hospital, in his role as an ex-officio member of the JV Board with Select Medical.
Previously, Annaswamy served as Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He also served as a staff physician and section chief in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the VA North Texas Health Care System/Dallas VA Medical Center.
Annaswamy received his medical training at Mysore Medical College, Mysore, India, and completed his postgraduate residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Annaswamy has served in the roles of clinician, educator and clinician-scientist, treating patients with spine disorders, musculoskeletal disorders and diseases of the muscles and nerves. He is deeply humbled by the recognitions for Outstanding Service and Research/Writing; awards that he has received from the Association of Academic Physiatrists and American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. But he is prouder still of the enduring impact he has left on the >75 students, trainees and faculty he has mentored over the years over the last 25 years.
Annaswamy has previously served on the governing boards of the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the Association of Academic Physiatrists and the Foundation for Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
