Masato Nagao, MD, PhD

Masato Nagao, MD, PhD is a physiatrist who treats patients with nerve, muscle, bone, and joint injuries, and helps them restore functional ability. His expertise includes trauma and musculoskeletal rehabilitation, peripheral nervous system disorders, nerve conduction studies and electromyography, and pain management.
Dr. Nagao earned his medical degree and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Sapporo Medical University in Japan, where he was appointed chief of hip and arthritis surgery. He subsequently completed a research fellowship in biomechanics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and an arthroplasty fellowship at the Center for Joint Preservation and Replacement at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. He later pursued training in physical medicine and rehabilitation, completing a residency at Albany Medical Center in New York, after which he became a physiatrist.
Dr. Nagao is an outstanding teacher who enhances the Department’s overall teaching capacity. He works closely with medical students and residents rotating through the rehabilitation service, expertly teaching them how to develop clinical plans for even the most complex cases. His teaching extends beyond UCSF, as he also educates physicians and residents internationally. He is frequently invited to speak at national and international meetings. As a testament to his expertise, he serves on several professional committees.
In addition, Dr. Nagao is co-director of the Orthopaedic Trauma Observership Program at the UCSF/ZSFG Orthopaedic Trauma Institute (OTI), which works in conjunction with the Department’s main outreach initiative, the Institute for Global Orthopaedics and Traumatology (IGOT). In this role, he furthers the Department’s educational mission and is dedicated to improving the global quality of care and the exchange of ideas.
