Andrew I. Gitkind, MD, MHA, is Vice Chair & Associatge professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, and Medical Directorof the Montefiore Spine Center at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Gitkind’s clinical focus is on the management of acute and chronic spine pain. He ultilizes both conservative and interventional techniques to help guide patients back to a high level of function and satisfaction. Most recently, Dr. Gitkind became one of a few physicians in the area to offer basivertebral nerve ablation to patients suffering from chronic axial lower back pain.
After earning his Doctor of Medicine at St. George’s University School of Medicine in Granada, West Indies, in 2004, Dr. Gitkind completed internship in internal medicine at Flushing Hospital Medical Center in 2005 before completing his PM&R residency at Montefiore in 2008. Following this, Dr. Gitkind completed a fellowship in pain management in 2012. He then earned his Master of Health Administration at the University of Phoenix in 2018.
Dr. Gitkind has conducted National Institute of Health (NIH) sponsored research. His work has been published as original communications in peer-reviewed journals, books, chapters, review articles, abstracts and poster presentations. He has given invited lectures locally and nationally. Dr. Gitkind is an editorial reviewer for the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, The Spine Journal and Pain Medicine.
Dr. Gitkind is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in his primary specialty and has subspecialty board certification in Pain Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the Spine Intervention Society, the North American Spine Society, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. Gitkind was named Top Doctor in the New York Times annually from 2018 through 2025
