Vu Nguyen, MD, MBA, is the Robert B. Kyle Endowed Professor and Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Nguyen specializes in neuro and stroke rehabilitation. His research interests are broad. In clinical research, he has worked on stroke recovery and hemiplegic shoulder pain neuromodulation, where his team was the first in the world to implant a permanent neuromodulator. He contributed to the achievement of FDA approval of the temporary technology that is now widely used for pain modulation. Academically, he enjoys research on graduate medical education and pedagogy processes. He published the first two papers on the use of the debate as a teaching tool at the residency training level. His team also published the first two PM&R papers on Entrustable Professional Activity and Observable Practice Activity, advancing competency based medical education at the graduate medical education level.
His current leadership roles include being a Director on the American Board of PM&R Board of Directors, where he chairs the Part I Examination Committee. He is a Reviewer on the ACGME PM&R Review Committee and is on the PM&R Common Requirements Writing Group. He serves on the Advisory Bureau of the Physiatry Foundation Board. Internationally, he was previously the United States Representative on the Assembly of Delegates and is the current North American Representative on the Executive Council of the International Society of PRM. Finally, he serves as a Director on the Lakeshore Foundation Board of Directors, a Paralympics National Training Center. He is a United States Air Force veteran, having served in the Medical Corps. Dr. Nguyen received his MD from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, MBA from East Carolina University, and BS from Drake University.
